4 East Coast Destinations

By Aaron Rote –

What do you see when you think of popular East Coast destinations? The New York City skyline? The rushing waters of Niagara Falls? The pristine beaches of Orlando? Certainly, these are all fantastic places to head for your Labor Day weekend vacation, but the East Coast has way more to offer than just a few popular landmarks.

If you’re willing to step outside the box (and your comfort zone), you’re sure to find a weekend getaway that is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. From north to south, here are four incredible destinations for Labor Day weekend:

fall scents for your home

Burlington, Vermont

Home to the University of Vermont, Burlington has become a popular destination for foodies and lovers of all things outdoors. Nestled along the coast of Lake Champlain, the city offers miles and miles of biking and hiking trails as well as every water-related activity you can think of. Church Street is the cultural center of downtown and is home to the famous Church Street Marketplace. Whether your poison is fresh seafood, farm-to-table cuisine or craft brew beer, the city truly has something for every taste. This is a great spot to take the family and get some fresh air for Labor Day.

Athens, Ohio

An hour south of Columbus lies the small town of Athens. For a town with only 24,000 people, Athens has one of the most robust downtown areas on the East Coast, complete with killer coffee shops, independent books stores and forward-thinking, vegan-friendly restaurants. Start your day with a latte at Donkey Coffee and end it with the tasting menu at 9 Tables. In between, explore the historical campus of Ohio University or take a ride on the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway Labor Day train.

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville is quickly becoming one of the hippest (and greenest) cities on the East Coast. Located along the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, the city is home to 21 craft breweries and the legendary music venue, The Orange Peel. If you like a little variety in your vacation, start the day with a tour of the historic Biltmore Estates, then head down the parkway to check out the North Carolina Arboretum, which is easily one of the best nature preserves on the East Coast. If you want to see local art, street performers and musicians, don’t miss the Lexington Avenue Arts and Fun Festival (LAAFF) this Labor Day weekend. To really get in the spirit of the festival, be sure to pack a fun costume to walk around in.

Louisville, Kentucky

Louisville has a small town feel and a big city attitude. For the true experience, book the Bourbon Lovers package at the 21C Museum and Boutique Hotel, and enjoy a long weekend packed with cocktails and distillery tours. Start with the Evan Williams distillery, which is right down the street and offers a truly interactive experience. You’ll also be close to the Louisville Slugger Factory and the nightlife of 4th Street Live. If you want something a little off the beaten path, head to the Silver Dollar for some incredible barbecue and a barrel-select bourbon. And don’t forget, Churchill Downs is more than just The Kentucky Derby. Races occur several days a week during the warmer months.
