Who Am I REALLY?

By Robyn Besemann−

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Do you see wrinkles around the eyes? Do you see tired eyes? Do you see yellowing teeth and tighter lips? Look again. Do you see eyes that have twinkled with the delight of her children, lips that have shared wisdom with others, a mouth that has eaten delicious meals and shared coffee with friends and family?

These are the outward appearances of years of life; the good and the bad, the harsh and the easy, the trauma and the victories. When we turn 50, we begin a new chapter of our lives and walk into the “has been” and the “yet to come”. Some of us have survived great trauma and turmoil when we were growing up, yet we continued to thrive.

Some of us have lived a fairly happy life, without many struggles, yet wonder what challenges lie ahead. Now, look in the mirror and look deeper. WHO do you see? Do you see a woman of integrity? Do you see someone who loves as much as she is loved? Do you see a child of God, who seeks Him in all she does? Do you see a woman who is trustworthy and trusts others? Do you see someone who enjoys life to the fullest and encourages others to do the same?

Maybe, like many women, you have lived life listening to voices from your past; voices that said you were worthless, were an inconvenience, were a mistake, were only good for “one thing”. Is that who you see in the mirror today?

Many times, we can be so covered by anger, hurt, and resentment that we are not free to explore who we really are underneath all the layers that others have put on us. In most cases, we don’t even know how. We have grown accustomed to looking at everything through a filter of anger and hurt. Often defining ourselves by what has happened and not by who God says we are. We have to realize that the enemy loves to do this to us – but it is time to put an end to this faulty thinking!

Faulty thinking can be anything from “I am not good enough” to “Nothing good will ever happen to me” to “That’s just me, I will never change.” These self-defeatist attitudes are deep. Thoughts like these can turn into beliefs and bury us in a swirl of doubt, fear, and eventually cause us to just give up.

It time to clean that mirror off and remove the grime of your past and see yourself clearly as God sees you! He made you and knows you inside and out. You are beautiful in His sight, no matter how you feel about yourself right now. That is the Truth.

“O Lord, you have searched me and You know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; You perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; You are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue You know it completely, O Lord. You hem me in – behind and before; You have laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. All Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139

“The Lord is faithful to all His promises and loving toward all He has made. The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down. The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth; He fulfills the desires of those who fear Him; He hears their cry and saves them.” Psalm 145:13b-14, 18,19

Read these verses again, speaking them out loud. Let them permeate you, beginning today. Every single time you begin to see a distorted view of yourself from the past, remember the truth of these verses and then flash that beautiful smile in your reflection of the mirror.
