Three of the Weirdest Beauty Treatments Celebrities Use

By Ryan Smith –

Although it might seem silly to try and delay the inevitable, in a world that seems to prize youth above everything else, it can be difficult to avoid the message that we should all be fighting an uphill battle against the aging process.

We might think that we’ve all become a lot more self-obsessed in the social media age, but in actual fact, women have been going to extreme lengths to fight against the signs of aging throughout history: from Cleopatra’s infamous milk baths, to Kim Kardashian’s “vampire facials”.

And with those in the public eye scrutinized so heavily, it’s no surprise celebrities rely on unorthodox methods to stay wrinkle-free.

Here are a few of the more unusual beauty treatments available to the rich and famous.

Hair removal

Most women will wax, shave or pluck unwanted body-hair at some point in their lives – but how many do you know that have shaved their whole faces?

It’s actually far more common than you might think. Classic movie stars such as Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe swore by the technique, and Rita Hepworth took the process further still by having her hairline raised by a full inch to make her look younger.

Shaving serves the dual purpose of not only removing the fine hair on your skin – which brightens skin and helps makeup stay on better – but also exfoliating. Removing the dead skin on your face daily can give the appearance of younger looking skin – and you don’t have to worry about a 5-o’clock shadow or sharp stubble, because the fine vellus hair on most women’s faces is different from body hair; it doesn’t grow back thicker and darker when shaved.

In fact, there are now expensive “dermaplaning” treatments you can buy, where your face is professionally shaved at a salon! But as long as you’re careful, a regular razor at home should do the job just as well.

Funny facials

We’re always hearing different reports of the weird and wonderful things celebrities are putting on their skin to keep it glowing. Famously, Sandra Bullock has admitted to using hemorrhoid cream to get rid of bags under her eyes (and it’s clearly working!), Victoria Beckham has resorted to a cream made from sheep placenta and bird poo facials to keep herself looking young, and model Bar Rafael has plumped for the more indulgent “24-Carat Gold” facial.

Although we don’t all have the money for gold – or the stomach for sheep placenta – as part of our beauty routines, there are some unusual household items you can use as part of a great DIY facial.

Ingredients such as avocado and banana make great bases for moisturising face masks, whilst oats can be a good exfoliator, and using yogurt can naturally prevent or reduce spots.

And then there’s the really unusual…

Rather than getting too squeamish with the details, let’s just say that many celebrities focus on some more gruesome treatments in order to stay looking younger. From Kim Kardashians ‘vampire facials’, to Demi Moore’s leeches, there really are some bizarre beauty treatments out there.

But we certainly don’t have to go to such extreme measures: if the thought of leeches makes you feel slightly queasy, you could opt for collagen supplements and copper enriched face creams instead.
