Things to do Around the Home and Garden

By Rosa Mendy –

After the festive season is over, there are plenty of jobs to do around your house and your garden. They don’t all need to be done in January, but take a look around, make a list and start to prioritize what to do and when. If you need to budget, why not get friends involved and make a party of it? Whether it’s changing the garden or painting a nursery, there’s always something to do.

A fresh start – repainting a room can give it new life, so whether it’s a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or living room, take a look around your house to see if anywhere could do with a new coat of paint. And it’s not just paint – there are lots of great wallpaper designs around, which will put a spark into any room, and once you’ve added some co-ordinating soft furnishings and new lighting, you’ll really feel like you’ve made a new start to the year.

Create a summer space like the one in the photo at top– it may seem like summer evenings are a long way away, but they’ll be here before you know it, so now is a great time to make sure you’ve got somewhere to sit out and enjoy the sun. Pop on an old polo t-shirt, get some men’s trousers that are suitable for gardening, Cotton Traders offers a variety trousers perfect for doing work around house and garden, so  like make a plan and get started. There are some great deals at garden centres for everything from paving to furniture, so you can spend the next few months creating a great space, and then spend the summer enjoying it.

Fix the little things – sometimes, it’s the little things that make the most difference. Clear the guttering, change the wall lights, buy a new rug, switch the furniture round, put up a new curtain pole, buy a water butt – whatever you do, the little things will help you to get your house and garden spruced up for spring.

Of course, you don’t have to do everything in winter – some jobs are better left until the weather improves. This time of year is great for making plans, and as long as you keep to them, you’ll feel you’ve really made a difference to your property in 2014. Be prepared, wear the right clothing, like a ladies waterproof jacket when working in the garden to keep yourself warm and dry, get professional help when you need it and put some money aside for the things you want to do later in the year, and it’ll all be a piece of cake.
