The Sure Thing

Consumers love the promise of a “money-back guaranty.” We want assurance we will receive the quality, content, or benefit promised by a product or service. If the outcome turns out to be less than we expected, then we have something to fall back on. Sadly, sometimes even a “money-back guaranty” isn’t even a sure thing.

Life is full of uncertainty – much of it more serious than whether or not our breakfast cereal will help us drop five pounds in two weeks. Computers crash. Big companies go bankrupt. Health fanatics get sick. Tsunamis wipe out entire countries.

Nothing in this physical life is completely dependable. Our earthly circumstances may be uncertain, but our spiritual circumstances are sure. The physical is temporary and transient, but the spiritual is certain and eternal.

16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:16-19, NIV

In the passage above, Paul reminds us of the certainty of God’s power and presence in our uncertain lives. From His abundant riches, God strengthens us with His power to meet uncertainty head on. Through every unpredictable circumstance of life, Jesus’ loving presence sustains us.

No matter how uncertain our earthly future may loom, God’s love is certainly bigger. No matter how much devastation our current situation may hold, God is able to work in greater ways than we can even imagine. In the midst of uncertain times, stand on the certainty of God’s power and loving presence. “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurable more than all we ask or imagine!” (Ephesians 3:20)
