Don’t Wait Until You’re Invited to a Wedding – to Dance

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

By Carol L. Doyel –

Seeking out a new romantic relationship can be a daunting undertaking at any age. Especially if you have lost a spouse whom you were married to for years or if you have been single for an extended period of time. But You’re never too old for love to bloom. For those over 50, though, discovering a brand new love interest can present a whole new level of apprehension – which can incite many would-be available 50+ singles to make every excuse they can think of to avoid the whole love-and-romance thing.

“I’m too old to date.”

“I don’t want to take any more chances.”

“I’m not adventurous enough to date again.”

“I’m too picky.”

“I don’t even know where to start.”

“No one wants an old bat like me.”

And so on. But as we plainly see in the lovely film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and the newly released sequel, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, – even apprehensive Boomers find that it’s never too late for love to bloom.

Movie characters Guy Chambers (Richard Gere) flirts with and attempts to woo Lavinia Beach (Tamsin Greig) while Evelyn and Douglas (Judi Dench and Bill Nighy) meekly dance around the idea of developing their relationship further. Their hesitance to take it beyond casual dates is a realistic representation of what many people over 50 face when they step out into the dating world again. It is even more difficult in real life for people to take the step of faith to be able to trust in love again.

One of the reasons dating again for boomers can be overwhelming is that people no longer meet the same way they did twenty, thirty or forty years ago. We don’t live in the same world that movie characters do. Most of us will probably not meet Mr. or Ms. Right during a super design-set Bali wedding that intrinsically creates an atmosphere of magic, electricity and romance. But being in the right place at the right time is actually easier than hoping and waiting for a grandiose wedding to be the indifferent matchmaker for you and your fated love.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel reminds us is that love is beautiful at any age. And every age. Sure, you can find a hundred and one reasons why you can’t or shouldn’t look again or actively seek a new relationship. But there are a million reasons why you should. Everyone deserves to love and be loved.

No one, regardless of their age, should punish themselves by acquiescing to loneliness. There is someone out there for everyone, whether you’re thirty-one, fifty-one or seventy-one – even when you’re not at a wedding, there’s always plenty of reasons to dance.
