Don’t Even Think About It!

don't even think about it

By Carol Doyel –

As I was hiking the other day I came upon a sign (the feature image for this article), warning people of “Dangerous Conditions,” and from climbing over the fence which could lead to death by falling from the steep cliffs along the coastline.

I found it interesting that the sign included the additional warning, “Don’t Even Think About It.” I’ve never seen a sign warning people to “not even think about” something.

I was reminded that as believers, God also warns us against even thinking about or “entertaining” certain thoughts and vain imaginations because He knows that if we do, it’s not long before we act on them in word and action.

Our battles as Christians start in our thought life, and our “talk-life.” What you think about, the mind conceives, and eventually believes which cause them to take root in our hearts, and “out of our heart flow the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23). The issues of life include the way we live, what we do, what we think, what we say or don’t say, who or what we worship…and ultimately what we chose; life or death, blessings or curses by the words we speak.

If we chose to focus on good, I believe goodness flows out of our hearts as well as our mouths. If you want to know what someone is thinking about, listen to what they are saying and what’s flowing out of their hearts and mouths.

If we are bent on evil thoughts then we will fall into conversations that do not honor God. If we harbor hatred in our hearts we tend to tear down instead of build-up or edify, which we are instructed to do as Christians in Ephesians 4:29.

Our heart condition can be seen from what flows in and out of our life. What we allow in, will flow out…by what we listen to or who we listen to, what we read, what we watch, and who we spend time with.

What are you allowing to flow in your life?

The Word warns us to “above all else” – did you catch that? Above ALL else, guard your hearts for it is the source of life. Out of it flows death or life, blessings or curses, through our words and actions.

A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person
produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows
from what is in your heart.
Luke 6:45 (NLT)

The other day as I was thinking about a particular person I found myself becoming upset, but caught myself and realized the danger of what I was thinking about and repented. If you find yourself lost in thoughts that are not healthy, loving, and life-giving, you need to STOP and take them captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5) – an act of submitting to God and resisting the enemy, so the devil will flee from you.

If we open the door to certain thoughts, the enemy can get a foothold, and if we continue to entertain those thoughts they can become a “stronghold” – Definition: a place that has been fortified so as to protect it against attack; or, a place where a particular cause or belief is strongly defended or upheld.

Are you defending a certain belief, position, or action that is not Biblical? If you are, then you have fallen into the hands of the enemy and sin and the wages of sin is death – physical and spiritual death so, “don’t even think about it.”

Stop, and take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ and repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand church!
