8 Tips for Decorating Your Front Porch

By Millie Rainer –

It is said that the first impression is the last impression. Well, if that’s true then I say that the first impression better be a lasting impression.

Just like you like to look good at all times, it makes sense to keep your home looking great at all times too. And why not? It is an extension of your personality and lifestyle!

It all begins with creating the perfect first impression. We’re talking about enhancing the face of your home – your front porch.

In this post, we look at a few tips that will help you spruce it up and turn it into an area you’d be truly proud of.

1. Get Artistic

Being artistic with your front porch can breathe new life into it. Use colors to make it look pleasant and appealing. Don’t just limit it to the walls; paint the floor, the window frames, the ceiling, or the front door. It won’t take much time or money.

Experiment with the floor by painting it in a shade that complements the color of your home, or try the famous and the fabulous checkerboard design. Try stripes to be on the safe side.

2. Use Flower Power

There’s no better way to say ‘welcome’ than with beautiful flowers. Not only do they add color and beauty to your front porch, they also make it smell wonderful. Being in a porch adorned with flowers is sure to transport you to an oasis where you feel relaxed and rejuvenated.

Place pots of flowers of all shapes and sizes at the entrance of your porch. Hang potted flower baskets, and place small flower boxes on the porch rails to create a setting of pure bliss.

If you’re worried that looking after your flowers will take up too much of your time and effort, you can go for low-maintenance (but pretty) options such as fern and ivy.

3. Add Green Spaces

Adding a few green spaces in the form of strips of artificial grass to your front porch will take its allure to another level altogether. I’m sure just looking at some green cover within the comfort of your porch would make even of the most chaotic of days seem tranquil and serene.

You can use pieces of synthetic grass to decorate your porch floor, or you could have the pillars or even a wall covered with it for a magnificent effect. The great thing about artificial grass is that it looks just like real grass, but does not require the kind of maintenance and upkeep that the latter does. You only have to install it and rinse it with water every now and then for a hassle-free, neat and clean looking turf.

4. Invest in Some Furniture

The kind of furniture you place in your front porch can definitely have an impact on its overall look and your image. You will do well in purchasing some high-quality patio furniture – elegant and comfortable chairs and even a café table to make it look like more of a relaxing and lounging area.

Already have patio furniture? Maybe you could give it a new lease of life by applying a fresh coat of paint to it. Apart from that, you can also throw in a couple of colorful cushions, draperies, or roll-up shades in bold prints into the décor for some drama.

Now imagine yourself lazing on your front porch on a Sunday morning – makes for a great way to enjoy your coffee!

5. Swing Along

To add a fun and youthful element to your front porch, bring in a swing and spend your evenings rocking gently on it, while enjoying the gentle breeze and watching life on your street, while everyone secretly wishes for a front porch like yours.

Somehow, a swing lends a hint of class and comfort to a porch. Just make sure it is well-supported from all sides and you should be good.

6. Bonsai, Anyone?

While bonsai trees are great for indoor decoration, they work equally well in sprucing up the look of your porch. Place them on the stairs or on the railings, or simply install a special shelf for them. They look sophisticated and their size makes them look adorable.

If bonsai is not your thing, you can build a small herb garden instead. Everyone uses herbs such as mint, rosemary, basil, etc. which are useful and fragrant. All you need to do is pot them in ceramic or plastic boxes and place them where they’ll be handy. Easy and practical!

7. Music and Peace

For a feeling of peace and serenity, hang a wind chime(s) from the ceiling of your porch and let it soothe your senses. Let it work in tandem with the cool breeze and drown out the noise of the traffic and the neighborhood buzz.

Wind chimes come in different shapes and sizes, and play several melodic tones ranging from the soft chiming of spring rain to the high-impact tones of a large gong.

8. Hang a Chandelier

To add an old-world charm and some romance to your front porch, hang a vintage crystal chandelier. No need to buy an expensive showroom chandelier, simply look for one at a garage sale or at the local flea market.

Chandeliers add an element of opulence and grandeur to any space. With a sophisticated one in place, your front porch is sure to look as delightful at nightfall as it will during daytime.

Conclusion

Any time is a good time to beautify your front porch. After all, it is the first place that people see when they visit you. Your front porch should hold a place of pride in your heart. It should appear warm and inviting, apart from looking stunning. I hope the above tips will come in handy in helping you achieve spectacular results with decorating yours.
